NPR was playing a montage of songs by artists who died in the year 2011, and I heard a snippet of "Baker Street" by Gerry Rafferty. Of course, I didn't think "Ah, it's Baker Street." Instead, I thought, "It's that song. That's actually a pretty nice song. What is the name of that song and who performs it? Wow, I have no idea. Quick, brain, copy a snippet of lyrics so that later on you can paste them into an internet search string!" Somehow, this plan worked. Thirteen hours after hearing it on NPR, I give this song to you to enjoy.

The Bowie Tree has many branches—or "boughs," if you will. This week we'll be decking The Lab with many such boughs, i.e., some of our favorite examples of the seemingly countless ways—direct and indirect—in which Mr Bowie has infiltrated other musicians and pop culture in general. Here's but one example a couple examples to help get you in the spirit:
1. The video I originally intended for this post (I finally figured out how to embed it):
SOUTHERN SOUL BLOCK
Go Home Girl - Arthur Alexander
Slip Away - Clarence Carter
She Ain't Gonna Do Right - James & Bobby Purify
Dirty Man - Laura Lee
I've Been Loving You Too Long - Otis Redding
SONGS ABOUT BUILDINGS
Don't Worry About the Government - Talking Heads
Winchester Cathedral - The New Vaudeville Band
Crying in the Chapel - Elvis Presley
Our House - Madness
Big Barn Red - Wings
Love Shack - The B-52's
SONGS ABOUT FOOD
Glass Onion - The Beatles
Cheese and Onions - The Rutles
Jambalaya (On the Bayou) - Fats Domino
Sweet Wine - Cream
A Google image search for "sandwich building" with no context whatsoever. What are these people up to?
This is our second-to-last Rock Show of the semester, and we've come up with a few Rock Show Blocks that you're certain to find entertaining. We'll be taking a dip into the world of Southern Soul, and then taking a page from the David Byrne playbook and putting together two complementary blocks: Songs About Buildings and Songs About Food. Who knows what else we will do. At Rock Show's heart is such spontaneity, even I cannot predict, though I'm guessing it will be A Few More Songs To Round Out The Hour.
Your Rock'n'Roll school is not in session this week, but you can still earn some extra credit by completing the assignment below, a blog-only episode of Rock Show that you play right here in your browser window. There's a great collection of music, starting with some classic Rock'n'Roll gold with Little Richard, then meandering over into some love and heartbreak including girl groups The Chantels and The Shirelles. The Moody Blues will finish off the block of love and heartbreak with "Go Now" from 1965. Then we'll pick up the pace with some upbeat tunes, starting with Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons and ending up in a funk twofer featuring Godfather of Soul James Brown and an early release by Funk/Soul/R&B legend Prince. If you're listening in America, enjoy your Thanksgiving dinner however you choose the celebrate! Elsewhere in the world: Have a great day and we'll see you back in The Lab @ KRUI next week!
Rock Show 11-23-2011 by Chris Lake on Grooveshark
Rock Show gave me some money to produce a blog post for tonight's show. I spent the money, so I don't have any left for the post. So this is it. I'm not joking. This is the post.
Theenk you verri much.

Per Wikipedia, there's only one guy of which it can be said that "Elvis Presley and Bono have stated his voice was, respectively, the greatest and most distinctive they had ever heard." That man would be Roy Orbison, who just happens to also be the cat who will be kicking off tonight's episode of Rock Show.
Orbison: the only artist ever inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame not for his music, but for "taming Bono's ego"
Tune in tonight at 7:00 for some Roy, some songs about dreams, some covers of Beatles' songs, and who knows what else!

Is the grayness, coldness, raininess and general dreariness of the impending winter season getting you down? Then tonight's episode of Rock Show may not be for you!
Technically it shall be an "open format" episode this evening, however as fate would have it, things seems to be shaping up into a quasi-embrace of the seasonal doldrums. Ah, but we'll be sure to sprinkle in a pinch of hope as well -- so rest assured that if you face Rock Show tonight, you'll still be able to face the day tomorrow!
Monster Mash - Vincent Price
Lullaby [extended mix] - The Cure
Spooky - Classics IV

With its powers combined, The Beatles 1967 "double A-side" Penny Lane / Strawberry Fields Forever represents arguably the most heralded single in the history of pop music.
Adding to its allure is the fact that it was a "non-album single"; that is, neither of its songs were featured on any of the band's original albums. I hasten to add the word "original" because both songs — along with two other non-album UK singles — would later be included by Capitol Records on the 11-track US release of Magical Mystery Tour, which would eventually (i.e., in 1987) supplant its UK counterpart (a six-track "double EP") as the "official" version of the "album." (Yeah, it's kind of complicated...)
Anyway, as Chris wonderfully put it in his much timelier post below, tonight's episode of Rock Show will celebrate other non-album singles. Tune in!
Today's Rock Show will feature non-album singles: Those songs released by artists as singles, but not featured on an album. Are these a dying breed, or is the practice of non-album singles being resurrected by mp3 culture? Heck if I know.
UPDATE: Be on the lookout for a much more thought-out version of this post by Mike, which I just realized he's working on.
Charlie Brown - The Coasters
At the Hop - Danny & the Juniors
Sleep Walk - Santo & Johnny
Dark End of the Street - Percy Sledge

After The Gold Rush [Live] - Neil Young
Hang Fire - The Rolling Stones
Waiting on a Friend - The Rolling Stones
My wife pointed me to this article on the AV Club about The Rolling Stones' Tattoo You. It has some interesting points to make about the Rolling Stones' great albums, their bad albums, and their great, bad albums. Maybe some Tattoo You should appear on tonight's Rock Show. What do YOU, the listeners, think?
All Along the Watchtower - Bob Dylan (original)
I Fought the Law - The Clash (The Crickets)
The Man Who Sold the World - Nirvana (David Bowie)
Long Black Veil - The Band (Lefty Frizzell)

Wild Horses - Flying Burrito Brothers (The Rolling Stones)
I Can't Get Next To You - Al Green (The Temptations)
For the second time in Rock Show history, we'll be presenting an "all cover songs" episode this evening at 7 PM. To help you get into the spirit, here's NFL legend Terry Bradshaw covering Hank Williams' stone-cold classic, "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry." To borrow a phrase from one of the YouTube commenters, prepare to get "Susan Boyled"...
Time got away from us a little bit there and we weren't quite able to finish the "Post-Beatles British Billboarding Block" -- celebrating the four post-Beatles/Stones UK rock bands that meet the following two criteria: (a) they are included in the Top 100 Artists of All Time, as ranked by the Acclaimed Music website; and (b) they had a #1 hit in the US.
We played Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac & The Police. And the fourth "band," making the list with an asterisk by their name (since they're technically a "duo"), is ... Pet Shop Boys:
Soul Block
He Was Really Sayin' Somethin' - The Velvettes
You Can't Hurry Love - The Supremes
I Second That Emotion - Smokey Robinson & The Miracles

Every Breath You Take - The Police
For the first time in the post-Rock-Show/Rick-Show-Schism Era, Rock Show is set to take center stage tonight at 7PM on The Lab @ KRUI. Tonight's episode will be Open Format, which means that pretty much anything goes -- except, of course, that the Rick Ban will be in full effect.
Indeed, we had to pull some strings to even link to the following video, feauturing a classic cut by Rick Derringer. Hope you enjoy it, as it may be the last sniff of Rick to ever grace the Rock Show website.
Our entirely Rick-related sister program, Rick Show, is now available in blog-only format at http://rickshowiowa.blogspot.com/. Check it out. Enjoy some wonderful videos featuring Rick Astley and Ricky Gervais. Make a Rickquest!
Thanks to Paul for making this dream a reality.

If you weren't able to catch Rock Show last week, you missed Chris' poignant reminiscing about "when Prince won the Superbowl"—upsetting the heavily favored Colts and Bears—by closing his show-stealing halftime performance with a symbol-laden rendition of "Purple Rain"...performed in the midst of actual rain!
Anyone up for a game of basket—er—football?
This week's episode—provisionally titled "The Weather"—threatens to invite similar musings as we tackle some of the rock genre's greatest songs related to rain, sun, snow, wind, sleet, cloudiness, fog, hurricanes, and perhaps even hail. Please send us your requests and tune in tomorrow (Wed) night at 7:00 CDT.

According to this website, "Bees carry pollen back to the hive in sacs on their legs. It is tempting to explain [the phrase, "the bee's knees"] as alluding to the concentrated goodness to be found around a bee's knee, but there's no evidence to support this explanation."
What's more, I've even heard it asserted in my day that bees don't even have knees, but the picture to my left would suggest otherwise.
But are said matters either here or there? Maybe. Because tonight on Rock Show, Chris and Mike shall return to The Hive Lab @ KRU with all sorts of "concentrated goodness" in the form of some of rock's greatest B-sides.
What's a B-side (or, for that matter, an A-side), you may ask. According to Wikipedia:
A-side and B-side originally referred to the two sides of gramophone records on which singles were released beginning in the 1950s. The terms have come to refer to the types of song conventionally placed on each side of the record, with the A-side being the featured song (the one that the record producer hopes will receive radio airplay and become a "hit"), while the B-side, or flipside, is a secondary song that often does not appear on the artist's LP.
Animal Farm - The Kinks (1968)

Tonight at 7PM your favorite Lab Lads, Chris & Mike, shall open up the 3rd series of Rock Show by putting themselves in a box (creatively speaking, that is):
In other words, we shall restrict ourselves to only playing songs about lab rats. On second thought, that's a tad too restrictive: let's make it songs related to any kind of animal.
We're heading back to the cozy studio that first launched this internet phenomenon that has come to be known affectionately around KRUI as "The Rock Show." Yes, Rock Show is heading back to The Lab@KRUI to bring you a full semester (a full year?) of web-only streaming classic rock and oldies the way that only we - or someone with similar record collections and/or access to the Iowa City Public Library - can! Tune in Wednesdays at 7 p.m., using the links to the right of this text.

Tonight, Rock Show brings you an encore presentation of last semester's "Covered In Beatles" episode, where we explored the original versions of songs that The Beatles would later put their unique stamp on. There may be some slight variations from the original playlist, and definitely some difference in what we choose to talk about during the breaks, but for the most part this is a straight-up rerun of "Covered in Beatles".
Theme Song/Intro Music: Backwards Traveler/Cuff Link - Wings The Things That Dreams Are Made Of - The Human League Back on the Chain Gang - The Pretenders Love to Stay - Altered Images The Look of Love, Pt. 1 - ABC Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' - Michael Jackson Nag - Joan Jett & the Blackhearts Scoundrel Days - A-Ha Kingdom of Love - Robyn Hitchcock & the Egyptians Road to Nowhere - Talking Heads COLLEGE RADIO CONFESSIONS When Love Breaks Down - Prefab Sprout Here Comes Your Man - The Pixies Girlfriend in a Coma - The Smiths
I changed my mind at the last minute and decided to play a more up-tempo song from this band. This song, though, always sticks with me. It seems to be about how the people you knew sometimes seem to hang around like ghosts. Or it's about actual ghosts. It's hard to tell in the crazy world of Robyn H.
This week, Mike and Chris return with more Rock Show. They're digging into their record collections to put together a full hour of 1980s vinyl. Enjoy vinyl hits from this bygone era, as well as lesser-known deep tracks from favorite 80s artists. Is there anyone in particular you want to hear?

One half of the Rock Show team (Mike) will be co-DJing a wedding reception in late July, and tonight's episode will be a dry run...
The goal: to play the one-hour's-worth of 60s and 70s classic rock & oldies songs that is most likely "to have as many people as possible getting down" at a wedding reception.

All I Want Is You - Roxy Music

I've just gotten word that the KRUI tower is currently not broadcasting. They are working on the issue. If the signal still isn't going out by 8:00 tonight, you'll have to tune in over the Inter-net.
Do be sure to tune in though, for some quality rock music, including some classic rock medleys and longer album tracks.
Tune in on Sunday night from 6-8pm to hear Chris fill in as a guest DJ on VeeGeePlus, the show that's all about vinyl. He'll be hauling in a stack of LPs, many of which fall well outside the format of Rock Show, and he may even have his son in tow to celebrate father's day the record collector way!

We won't be in the studio on Memorial Day, so be sure to remember to tune back in to Rock Show on Monday, June 6th. We might be inclined to play Elvis Presley's haunting rendition of "Blue Moon" and a lesser-known girl group tune that is simply insane.

This Friday will be our last Rock Show for the semester. Keep watching this spot (or the Facebook page) for schedule information for a possible Summer Session of Rock Show.
How do you turn your children, nieces, nephews, or the children of your friends into Rock Show fans? Start them out early with some fun, kid-friendly Classic Rock and Oldies tunes. Songs like this have had a proud history, even before The Beatles famously decreed that all toy submarines shall be yellow. (The penalty for breaking this rule is DEATH!) Maybe with enough requests, this block of "Kid Rock" could grow to take over the hour.
This is not what I meant! Do not ask us to play Kid Rock!
The Beatles - Her Majesty
So You Think You're In Love - Robyn Hitchcock
The Perfect Girl - The Cure
God Only Knows - David Bowie
Squeeze Box - The Who

Baby Blue - Badfinger
Waterloo Sunset - The Kinks
Crocodile Rock - Elton John
Your Song - Elton John
You Gave Me The Answer - Paul McCartney & Wings
Sweethearts Together - The Rolling Stones
This one comes from my favorite Pink Floyd album: Meddle. This song is so thoroughly steeped in the comfort and safety of home and bed, and the quiet, reassuring companionship of your sleeping sweetheart. - Chris
John Lennon - "Oh Yoko"
Elton John - "Love Song"
Robyn Hitchcock & the Egyptians - "Insect Mother"
A weirder alternative to the Robyn Hitchcock song I elected to play during the episode proper ("So You Think You're In Love"), "Insect Mother" is more of a psychedelic rock-influenced head trip of a love song. - Chris
I made this in Microsoft Paint at work in five minutes.
This Friday we're playing British love songs to celebrate the marriage of this well-to-do daughter of successful entrepreneurs to this ward of the state. I'm not sure what he does for a living. I think he was in the army for a while - or maybe that was jail. Anyway, we're very disappointed in her.
All that aside: Come and join us to celebrate LOVE! Rock Show Style!
WAR WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR BLOCK
Masters of War - Bob Dylan
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down - The Band
My Uncle - The Flying Burrito Brothers

The WIND Cries Mary - The Hendrix Experience
Play With FIRE - The Rolling Stones (A-side = The Last Time)
You Don't Miss Your WATER - Otis Redding
Temptation Inside Your HEART - The Velvet Underground
Following 2 wild weeks of loosening the standard Rock Show policies—typified by Mike's moment of Oasis indulgence, not to mention a glaring absence of catch phrases and sound effects —this week we'll be getting back to basics with a one-hour celebration of good old 50s and 60s rock. Any requests?
LEFTOVER COVERS FROM LAST WEEK C'mon Feel The Noize - Oasis Suffragette City - Big Audio Dynamite Happy - Of Montreal Knockin' on Heaven's Door - Guns & Roses

WALL OF (unfulfilled requests) SHAME BLOCK Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere - Neil Young Bicycle Race - Queen Space Oddity - David Bowie Damaged Goods - Gang of Four
...AND FROM THE DARKEST DEPTHS OF MORDOR Ramble On - Led Zeppelin
Why are Chris and Mike in fear for their lives? Is it because Lawman is about to put an end to their running? Because they can hear their Mommas a'cryin? Because Hangman is comin' down from the gallows?
If the answers to such queries be of any concern to you, tune into The Lab @ KRUI this Friday at 6 for Season I, Episode XII of Rock Show: "Open Format Vol. IV." The reward for doing so could be very bountiful indeed...
The jig is up, boys, and the news is out!
The agenda will include making amends for some items on the "Rock Show Wall of (Unfulfilled Requests) Shame" as well as dusting off a few cover songs that we didn't get to last week.
La Bamba - Los Lobos (Ritchie Valens)
Don't You (Forget About Me) - Billy Idol (Simple Minds)

Between 1960 and 1962, the Beatles landed several weeks-to-months-long gigs playing clubs in the Reeperbahn district of Hamburg, West Germany, where they were obligated to perform for a minimum of 4½ — and by some accounts up to 8-10 — hours per day.
In addition to getting them hooked on beer and uppers, the demands of the Hamburg lifestyle also led the band to improve dramatically as musicians, and vastly expand their onstage repertoire — in particular their grasp of covering the American music (early rock & roll, R&B, rockabilly, soul, girl groups) that influenced them.
On this week's Rock Show, we'll be playing the original versions of songs that influenced the Beatles strongly enough for the band to eventually cover them on their official studio albums.
Is there a particular song which would later be covered by the Beatles that you'd like us to play? Do you need to take Preludin in order to stay awake throughout an entire episode of Rock Show? Let your voice be heard!

It's Spring Break at the University of Iowa, so Rock Show and its brethren are taking the week off. We'll return next week with more great music. In the meantime, you can tune into The Lab's stream to hear whatever tunes the computer is picking. I know, I know: a computer can't miscue songs and make terrible puns, but it'll have to do.
In the meantime, feel free to use this thread for general discussion of what sorts of rock/pop music "themes" you'd like to hear us tackle, with examples of songs that fit these themes.
A couple of themes we're working on for upcoming Rock Shows are Soul Music (or perhaps a combo Funk/Soul show) and Covers (Elton John and John Lennon covering "I Saw Her Standing There" live in concert? We can provide that.)
Shake Appeal - The Stooges
Shake, Rattle And Roll - Big Joe Turner

Episode 8 of Rock Show will have no specific theme, so bring on the requests.
That said, even "open format" episodes have some restrictions, and this week is no exception. For starters, theme music from the Rocky film franchise will not be tolerated this week. Also, I know this is to the chagrin of many, but the Oasis ban remains in effect. Other than that, though, if there's some 50s, 60s or 70s (or even early 80s) Rock music that you wanna hear, let us know!

Rock your socks off with the likes of Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, as well as some lesser-known artists from the heyday of Rockabilly music on this week's Rock Show. This is where to post your requests if there's anything specific you want to hear. We'll even entertain the possibility of some later Rockabilly Revival, but only if it really cooks!

An argument could be made that Joy Division was the ultimate post-punk band. Then again, an argument could also be made that playing too much Joy Division on tonight's show would be so depressing that no one would ever want to listen to Rock Show again. After taking both lines of argument into account, I've decided to take one of the songs I'd thought of playing tonight and reassign it to the important role of pre-show bloody blog bonus track. Remember to tune into The Lab tonight at 6:00 CST!
Do you have any favorites from the post-punk era? (Think early The Cure, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Devo, Bauhaus, Public Image Ltd, Joy Division, Gang Of Four...)
Or just imagine what sort of music you might be singing if you looked like this.

Badge - Cream (f. George Harrison)
Girl From The North Country - Bob Dylan (f. Johnny Cash)
Wanted Man - Johnny Cash (co-written by Bob Dylan)

Say Say Say - Paul McCartney (f. Michael Jackson)
Okay, Chevy Chase is actually just lip-syncing to Paul Simon's lyrics in this video, but this "simulated collaboration" is still pretty entertaining in my book. VH1 used to play this song all the time in the mid-1990's. For some REAL collaborations, don't forget to tune in to Rock Show tonight!
Everybody knows that late-90s R&B superstars Brandy & Monica once collaborated on an epic track titled "The Boy Is Mine." But did you further know know that Sir Paul McCartney and the late Michael Jackson once joined forces for a little ditty called "The GIRL is Mine"?
But seriously, what are your favorite collaborations?
Queen and David Bowie?
Clapton's guitar work on The Beatles' "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"?
BBC News talks to Alan McKechnie, a man who used to watch the Beatles when he was just 16 during their Cavern Club days:
It wasn't just the music and the singing, it was their lack of respect for the audience. At the Cavern for those first few gigs, they were quite irreverent to the audience and other people. They were sort of the first punk band. The Beatles were a law unto themselves on the stage.
...
I think the ones who thought that they'd discovered them were a little clique and really did give up on them when the masses found them. It was only when I heard Love Me Do on the radio that I started getting interested in them again.
There will be no specific theme this week. We are open to your requests for songs from across the broad spectrum of oldies and classic rock from the 50's, 60's, and 70's. Something from the 80's? We'll think about it.
You no longer need to have a Google or OpenID account in order to comment. Take out your frustration with the world by making your requests below!

"From Hell's heart, I stab at thee."
Will there be Bowie? Yes, there will HAVE to be some Bowie!
The theme for Friday's show is The British Invasion. At the end of the hour, we might make room for a couple of requests that don't fit the British Invasion label, but try to think of something you'd like to hear from those days when Britannia first ruled the U.S. airwaves.
Use the gadget below to listen to (most) of the songs from this week's show, without the awesome bits where our hosts talk in between.
