Rock Show 11/30/2011: Southern Soul/Songs About Buildings/Songs About Food

A Google image search for "sandwich building" with no context whatsoever. What are these people up to?

This is our second-to-last Rock Show of the semester, and we've come up with a few Rock Show Blocks that you're certain to find entertaining. We'll be taking a dip into the world of Southern Soul, and then taking a page from the David Byrne playbook and putting together two complementary blocks: Songs About Buildings and Songs About Food. Who knows what else we will do. At Rock Show's heart is such spontaneity, even I cannot predict, though I'm guessing it will be A Few More Songs To Round Out The Hour.

Thanksgiving Blog-Only Playlist: 11/24/2011

Your Rock'n'Roll school is not in session this week, but you can still earn some extra credit by completing the assignment below, a blog-only episode of Rock Show that you play right here in your browser window. There's a great collection of music, starting with some classic Rock'n'Roll gold with Little Richard, then meandering over into some love and heartbreak including girl groups The Chantels and The Shirelles. The Moody Blues will finish off the block of love and heartbreak with "Go Now" from 1965. Then we'll pick up the pace with some upbeat tunes, starting with Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons and ending up in a funk twofer featuring Godfather of Soul James Brown and an early release by Funk/Soul/R&B legend Prince. If you're listening in America, enjoy your Thanksgiving dinner however you choose the celebrate! Elsewhere in the world: Have a great day and we'll see you back in The Lab @ KRUI next week! Per Wikipedia, there's only one guy of which it can be said that "Elvis Presley and Bono have stated his voice was, respectively, the greatest and most distinctive they had ever heard." That man would be Roy Orbison, who just happens to also be the cat who will be kicking off tonight's episode of Rock Show.

Orbison: the only artist ever inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
not for his music, but for "taming Bono's ego"
Tune in tonight at 7:00 for some Roy, some songs about dreams, some covers of Beatles' songs, and who knows what else!

Series 3, Episode 11: Open Season

Is the grayness, coldness, raininess and general dreariness of the impending winter season getting you down? Then tonight's episode of Rock Show may not be for you!

Technically it shall be an "open format" episode this evening, however as fate would have it, things seems to be shaping up into a quasi-embrace of the seasonal doldrums. Ah, but we'll be sure to sprinkle in a pinch of hope as well -- so rest assured that if you face Rock Show tonight, you'll still be able to face the day tomorrow!
